Unidirectional Water Main Flushing
Henrico County Department of Public Utilities (DPU) has about 1,570 miles of water mains and provides service to over 92,000 water customers. DPU has developed a water main flushing program to maintain high water quality in the distribution system and in the water supplied to our customers.

A unidirectional flushing (UDF) program is a systematic method of flushing drinking water distribution piping by strategically closing valves and opening hydrants to direct water at high velocities through targeted segments of pipe.
The benefits to developing and implementing a UDF over the conventional method of distribution system flushing:
- Maximizes water velocities to flush water pipes and remove sediment.
- Improves water quality.
- Uses less water than conventional flushing and is more effective.
DPU plans to flush the entire system in a 10 year period. Flushing will occur between April and November. For more information, please click here http://henrico.us/utility/udf/udffaqs.html.
