PREA Policy

It is the policy of the Henrico Juvenile Detention Home (HJDH) to fully comply with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) and the National Standards promulgated by the United States Department of Justice to prevent, detect, and respond to prison rape under PREA and to provide a safe, humane, and secure environment for all residents free of sexual abuse and sexual harassment.

The Henrico Juvenile Detention Home maintains a zero tolerance for resident-on- resident sexual assault, staff sexual misconduct, and sexual harassment toward residents. Every allegation of sexual assault, misconduct and harassment is thoroughly investigated, and all reports of sexual assault/abuse are referred to the Henrico County Police Department for criminal investigation.

To ensure that sexual misconduct is reported, HJDH has several ways for parents and third parties to report. You may use the reporting method with which you are most comfortable.

  1. Tell any staff member at HJDH. It is part of their job to report any allegation, ensure the resident’s safety, and maintain confidentiality.
  2. Send a letter to the Superintendent of HJDH
  3. Send a letter to the Department of Juvenile Justice or Child Protective Services.
  4. Call the Superintendent, Assistant Superintendents, Department of Juvenile Justice or Child Protective Services.
