Professor Lynn Rainville, author Virginia and the Great War, shares information about the surprisingly large role that the state played in World War I. She will discuss the efforts of women and men on the home front, trace the paths of Virginians fighting in France, and highlight the memorials that were created in the Commonwealth to honor the sacrifices of these soldiers. In 1812, Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall led an expedition to find a practical river and canal route connecting Richmond to the Ohio River Valley. His work led to the creation of the James River and Kanawha Canal. Two hundred years later, Andrew Shaw and his crew poled the Mary Marshall batteau upstream for 225 miles on the James and Jackson Rivers. Did you know of the four air war missions - fighter, bomber, reconnaissance and airlift - all but airlift were defined and in place by the end of World War I? This war defined the aviation mission but also helped to create the somewhat romanticized image of the combat pilot that prevails to this day.
