Varina Supervisor Nelson appointed chair of Virginia Compensation Board

Varina District Supervisor Tyrone E. Nelson has been appointed chair of the Virginia Compensation Board by Gov. Ralph Northam, effective May 11.

The board is responsible for determining the state’s share of costs for the operations of constitutional offices and for assisting the officers and their staffs to enhance services to residents of the commonwealth.

Nelson is serving his second term on Henrico’s board and is its vice chairman for 2018. He serves on boards of other governmental and community organizations, including the Richmond Regional Planning District Commission, Virginia Transit Association, Richmond Region Tourism, Richmond Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Richmond Performing Arts Alliance and Virginia Commonwealth University.

A native of the Varina District, Nelson earned an associate degree from J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, a bachelor’s degree from VCU and a master’s degree from Virginia Union University. He is the pastor of Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church in Richmond.
