Victim Witness Assistance

A Message From Your Commonwealth’s Attorney Shannon Taylor

If you have been the victim of a crime or have witnessed a crime, your participation in the criminal justice process is important.

The Commonwealth Attorney’s Office has a Victim Witness Assistance Program to help you deal with the complexities of our criminal justice system. The staff of this program will advise you of your rights, inform you of the status of your case, and let you know what resources are available to help you. Thank you for your cooperation. With your help, we can do our best to bring justice to your case.

Victim/Witness Assistance Program

What is the Victim/Witness Assistance Program (V/WAP)?
We help ensure the Henrico County victims and witnesses of crime receive fair and compassionate treatment while participating in the criminal justice system. We also, to the best of our ability, ensure they receive the rights entitled to them under the Virginia Crime Victims and Witness Rights Act.

The goals of our program are:

To reduce the psychological trauma associated with being a victim of a crime by helping the victim with emotional support, crisis counseling, advocacy, referrals to local social service agencies. Additionally, we can give information on the status of the case, status of the person arrested, the court system and their rights as a crime victim and address safety concerns.

The legal process, frequently long and complicated, often fails to address the unique needs of victims. However, our V/WAP advocates are available to make sure that these needs are addressed.

You can reach the Henrico County Victim/Witness Assistance Program by phone at (804) 501-1680 or by email at [email protected].

In recognition of the Commonwealth’s concern for the victims and witnesses of crime, it is the purpose of this chapter to ensure that the full impact of crime is brought to the attention of the courts of the Commonwealth; that crime victims and witnesses are treated with dignity, respect and sensitivity; and that their privacy is protected to the extent permissible under law.

It is the further purpose of this chapter to ensure that victims and witnesses are informed of the rights provided to them under the laws of the Commonwealth. If you are a crime victim and have suffered physical, psychological or economic harm as a direct result of any of the following crimes: any felony, assault and battery, stalking, sexual battery, attempted sexual battery or DWI, you may be entitled to: Protection, financial assistance, victim input, notification and courtroom assistance.
