Henrico Extension opens enrollment for SMART Scapes

The Henrico County office of Virginia Cooperative Extension is accepting enrollment in SMART Scapes, a program that helps residents assess their home landscape and offers guidance on planting, pruning and mulching.

For a $10 fee, Master Gardener volunteers will visit a home, analyze the landscape and prepare reference materials customized for the landscape. The materials will include a property map, fact sheets on current plantings, general gardening information and more. Participants also will receive the book “Native Plants for Virginia’s Capital Region: Plant RVA Natives A Capital Idea!”

SMART Scapes follows the concepts of SMART – Soil test, Match plants to site, Arranging plants, Rain and irrigation and Trouble-free maintenance – that emphasize best management practices for a beautiful, healthy and sustainable landscape. Turf grasses are assessed through Extension’s SMART Lawns program, not SMART Scapes. Enrollment in SMART Lawns also is underway.

Registration for SMART Scapes will remain open through Friday, Oct. 13. For more information or an application, go online or call (804) 501-5160.
