Gretchen Brown named director of Social Services

Gretchen I. Brown has been appointed director of the Henrico County Department of Social Services, effective May 20.

She joined the department in 2000 and served most recently as its assistant director for service programs. She began her career in Prince William County as a senior social worker for Child Protective Services and also worked in Henrico as a senior social worker, a casework supervisor with Child Protective Services and division manager for Child Welfare Programs. As director, she succeeds Ty F. Parr, who had led the agency from 2017 until early this year.

Social Services is responsible for administering local financial assistance and social services programs that help individuals and families meet their basic human needs and increase their capacity to function independently. The department also provides protection for abused and neglected children as well as aged and disabled adults.

Social Services has an approved staff of 222 and a budget of $25.9 million for fiscal year 2022-23.

Brown earned a Bachelor of Science in sociology and social work from Miami University (Ohio) and a Master of Science in social work from Virginia Commonwealth University.
