Sandston library to reopen with Nov. 30 open house following ‘refresh’ project

Sandston Branch Library will hold an open house Wednesday, Nov. 30 to celebrate its reopening after receiving extensive improvements to its interior and exterior. The library, which closed for the “refresh” project Sept. 12, is the longest-serving location of the Henrico County Public Library.

The day will begin with a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m., with remarks from Varina District Supervisor Tyrone E. Nelson and County Manager John A. Vithoulkas. The ceremony will be followed by a Family Storytime at 10:30 a.m. Light refreshments and family-friendly activities, including a Lego building program for children at 3:30 p.m., and drop-in button-making and take-and-make craft kits for teens, will be available throughout the day.

“Neighborhood libraries strengthen communities and families with connection, reading and enjoyment,” Library Director Barbara Weedman said. “The updated Sandston Branch is brighter all around with new shelving and plentiful books that we hope will inspire you to learn or stretch your imagination. Come check out a new library experience in the heart of Sandston.”

Sandston Branch Library is the latest location of Henrico County Public Library to receive an updated look and feel. The project delivered more than $411,000 in improvements, including modern A-frame shelving to facilitate browsing and book display, upgraded audio-video equipment in the meeting room, new carpeting and paint throughout the building, new eco-friendly landscaping and resurfaced parking lots. As a first phase of improvements, the library’s lighting was updated last year to provide environmentally friendly, energy-efficient fixtures.

A future addition to the library will be a Computer Work and Play Station, currently on order courtesy of the Friends of Henrico County Public Library. This award-winning workstation, originally custom designed for Fairfield Area Library, went viral on social media and has been recognized as an innovative furniture solution for caregivers doing computer work at the library while accompanied by a small child.

The Sandston library, located at 23 E. Williamsburg Road, will resume normal business hours starting Nov. 30. The library operates from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday. More information about the library and its recent upgrades is at henricolibrary.org/sandston.
