Henrico 4-H accepting registrations for 3 special interest clubs for youth

Virtual SPIN clubs will explore animal science, Mars Base Camp, water

Henrico 4-H will offer three virtual special interest clubs this spring to help youth explore the wonders of animal science, the Mars Base Camp and water through fun, hands-on activities.

The special interest, or SPIN, clubs are designed to be educational by focusing on STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects and mirroring curriculum from the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL). The deadline to register for each club is Wednesday, Feb. 24.

The Animal Science SPIN Club is geared for animal lovers ages 9 and older but is open to all. Members will explore such topics as livestock, companion animals, veterinary science, nutrition and genetics, and will participate in an embryology project. Sessions will be held on Zoom from 4 to 4:30 p.m. each Wednesday from March 3 through March 31. Members will complete weekly assignments and a project book. For details or to register, go online.

The Mars Base Camp: SPIN Club will explore the prospects of life on Mars and various features of the red planet. Members will learn concepts in environmental science, biology and agriculture on Mars, and will design their own Mars Rover. The club is open to youth ages 8 and older, although activities will align with the third- through eighth-grade SOLs. Each family will need to purchase a $15 kit that can serve up to four youth. Sessions will be held on Zoom from 4 to 5:30 p.m. every other Wednesday from March 3 through April 14. For details or to register, go online.

The Wonderful Water SPIN Club will examine how water sustains life on Earth as well as such topics as its properties, water pollution, clean drinking water, irrigation systems and more. The club is open to youth ages 9 and older, although activities will align with the fourth-grade SOLs. Members will need to purchase a $10 activity kit. Sessions will be held on Zoom from 4 to 5 p.m. on Thursdays from March 4 through April 8. For details or to register, go online.
