Strong Waste Program

Commercial and industrial customers, including restaurants, nursing homes and manufacturing facilities, generate waste streams that are higher in strength than the average residential customer. The indicators of “strength” are BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) and TSS (total suspended solids). To recover added treatment and sewer maintenance costs, a strong waste surcharge program was developed.

Food preparation facilities can reduce strong waste charges by providing pretreatment of the wastewater originating in the kitchen area. Normally, this is in the form of an exterior grease trap; however, internal interceptors may be adequate, depending upon the volume of flow. NO device will operate efficiently, unless it is properly and regularly maintained!
