Community Support Services
Henrico Area Mental Health and Developmental Services Community Support Services Division serves persons with intellectual disability and children with developmental delays.
We believe that services should be consumer driven and provided in the community. It is the role of CSS staff to provide consumers with information and ensure a level of understanding so that there is informed decision making by the consumer to the extent possible. We acknowledge the importance of family involvement as the people who know the individual best and care about the person the most. In order to provide a complete person centered level of support we use a team approach bringing together all available resources ensuring that we are providing the best care and support for our clients.
Residential Services provides housing opportunities for individuals needing specialized services and supports to live in the community. Services are based on each individual’s support needs and follow the principles that individuals with intellectual disabilities can be active members of their community.
Group Homes
- Are located in residential neighborhoods throughout the area
- Are operated by a variety of public and private providers
- Generally provide 24 hours support to 6 or fewer individuals in one residence
- Support individuals in activities of daily living, access to medical care, leisure, personal care and community participation
- Are licensed by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services
- Assess a fee for room and board generally at 80% of the individual’s income
- Require funding for staff supports through the Medicaid Home and Community Based ID Waiver program.
Respite
Respite is a support service that is available to families who have a family member with intellectual disability. Limited funding is available to enable families to purchase respite care from a variety of providers. Respite funds the following:
- Center based respite (Saturday day and weekend long)
- Voucher respite
Family Support
Limited funds are available on a first come basis for income eligible families to help with expenses like behavior consultations, summer camp, summer school, special equipment and emergencies.
One Time Rental Subsidies
These can be requested for individuals with disabilities who need assistance with the costs in setting up a separate residence. Subsidies can be used for:
- Deposits
- Minor furniture purchases
- Household supplies, etc.
