Henrico Area Mental Health & Developmental Services is committed to providing treatment and recovery services to those recovering from a Substance Use Disorder. Our adult program serves individuals over the age of 18. We recognize that problems associated with alcohol and other drug use impact not only the individual but also the family, the workplace, and the general community.
A Substance Use Disorder is present when a person’s use of alcohol or other drugs continues despite problems it causes in any area of life: personal, social, familial, medical, and/or employment. While alcohol is the substance most frequently abused, marijuana, cocaine, heroin and other drugs are also common. A high percentage of Henrico Area Mental Health & Developmental Services clients are dually diagnosed, having significant mental health concerns in conjunction with a substance use disorder.

Outpatient Services
Services are provided in a trauma informed manner. Services start with a thorough evaluation via Same Day Access. Treatment recommendations are made based on the result of the evaluation. Recommendations may range from individual counseling, substance use education groups, treatment groups, medication assisted recovery, detoxification or residential treatment. Urine drug screens may be utilized as part of the initial assessment and ongoing support of treatment. In addition to the clinic-based services, we provide support to the RISE (Recovery in a Secure Environment) program at the Henrico Regional Jail. Substance Use case management is provided to those who are participating in the Substance Use Diversion service.
Peer Services
Including providers with lived experience is an important part of the SUD services provided. Peers offer
an invaluable service to our clients. They provide both individual and group sessions to assist our
participants with their recovery. Additionally, peers provide REVIVE training to both community
members and our clients. Peers are an integral part of our outreach and community education efforts
as well.

Women’s Services
Henrico Area Mental Health & Developmental Services (HAMHDS) offers specialized evidence-based outpatient substance abuse treatment programming for women. HAMHDS gives priority to pregnant & post-partum women who are using drugs and/or alcohol. Therapeutic interventions address issues such as relapse prevention, self-care, relationships and intimacy, healthy boundaries, parenting, domestic violence/abuse, and exploitation. Providers help participants link to community-based resources.

SUD Case Management Program for Pregnant and Parenting Women
SUD Case management can help mothers with substance use disorders achieve and maintain recovery and stable housing. Mom will receive a comprehensive needs assessment and will assist in the development of an individualized plan that addresses her preferences and families’ unique needs and circumstance. The goal is to assist in resolving barriers that can feel insurmountable for a parent recovering from a substance use disorder. Assistance is provided to coordinate medical care for mom and child, linking to entitlements, applying for permanent supportive housing programs, obtaining childcare, utilizing mental health/substance use treatment resources, referral for vocational assistance and identification of social supports. Fundamental to the SUD Case Management program is helping mom secure stable housing and preventing a recurrence of housing instability. Options can include linking to County approved recovery residences specializing in helping pregnant and parenting moms. A phased approach offers an incremental plan towards stabilized housing while maintaining recovery from substances. Participants can be followed for up to a year and transitioned into other services in the agency as needed.
Opiate Services
We provide Office-Based Opiate Treatment (OBOT). This program offers medication assisted recovery, individual and group therapy as well as case coordination. Options for medication assisted recovery include: Suboxone, Vivitrol, and Campral. Additionally, we contract with a provider in the community to provide Methadone for our clients if appropriate.
On site Medical Services
Often those who have a Substance Use Disorder also deal with significant medical concerns. We have partnered with the Daily Planet to provide primary care services for our clients on site at both our Woodman Road and Nine Mile Road offices. Clinical staff can assist with linking you to medical services and will provide you with information on Hep A, Hep B and C, HIV and TB at your Same Day Access appointment.

Detoxification and Residential Treatment
Detoxification and Residential Treatment Services are available through arrangements with local private hospitals and specialized treatment facilities should the individual meet the ASAM criteria for those levels of care. HAMHDS has limited funding to assist with local residential treatment for those who qualify and have no insurance.

Revive Training and Narcan
We offer both in person and virtual training on Narcan/Naloxone administration. The training lasts approximately 15 minutes and once you have completed it, you will receive Narcan in the mail for use. Narcan/Naloxone is a safe response to someone who is overdosing and frequently saves lives. We offer day and evening individual virtual classes. To learn more and to sign up, contact 804-727-8515.

Building Blocks Education Group
We offer an educational class for $60.00. This class provides education on how substances affect the brain, assessing how substances are affecting your life, how to recover from substance use, etc. Peers provide their recovery journey with participants. All attendees must participate for the entirety of the class which is approximately 4 hours. This class is offered in person every other month. Each attendee who completes the class will receive a certificate of completion. For more information, please contact 804-727-8515.
Involvement in self-help groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Al-Anon, SMART Recovery and Narcotics Anonymous is an important component of treatment and strongly encouraged.
