Extension offers virtual 4-H Mars Base Camp STEM Club for youth

The Henrico County office of Virginia Cooperative Extension will offer a virtual Mars Base Camp 4-H STEM Club to help youth develop critical-thinking skills while participating in fun activities.

The club, based on NASA’s commissioned study of a potential human exploratory mission to Mars, is open to youth ages 9 through 13 as of Sept. 30, 2021.

The club will meet from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on four Wednesdays: Nov. 11 and 18 and Dec. 2 and 9. The sessions are designed to help participants develop quantitative and observational skills while having fun making discoveries and designing solutions. Individual sessions will focus on the landing zone surveyor, red planet odyssey, crop curiosity and insight from Mars. A link to participate will be shared Monday, Nov. 9.

Participants must register and purchase a 4-H Mars Base Camp Family Kit for $10. Each kit serves up to four youth and includes additional hands-on activities.

Online registration will be available through Wednesday, Nov. 4 or until all spots are filled. Kits will be available for pickup from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5 or Friday, Nov. 6 at the Extension office in Henrico County’s Human Services Building, 8600 Dixon Powers Drive.

Checks should be payable to the “Henrico 4-H Fund” and can be mailed to VCE-Henrico 4-H, P.O. Box 90775 Henrico, VA 23273. Payments must be made to receive a camp kit.
