Henrico taps Bentley Chan to lead Public Utilities

Henrico County has appointed Bentley P. Chan director of the Department of Public Utilities (DPU), effective Saturday, July 18.

A member of the DPU staff since 2007, Chan previously served as a utilities engineer and was named assistant director in January 2017. He was appointed acting director of the agency in May.

As director, Chan will head an agency with 380 employees and a budget of more than $117 million for the 2020-21 fiscal year. DPU provides drinking water and wastewater services to more than 100,000 customers. In addition, the agency provides solid waste disposal services and manages the Keep Henrico Beautiful program. DPU also oversees the largest reservoir project in Virginia, Cobbs Creek Reservoir, currently under construction in Cumberland County.

A graduate of Hermitage High School in Henrico, Chan earned a bachelor’s degree and a Master of Business Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University. He also received a graduate certificate in local government management from Virginia Tech. Chan is a registered Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
