Fireplace

County approved permit plans are required on site for all inspections including reinspections.

The FIREPLACE (Masonry) inspection is required after the first flue liner is set.

  1. Fireplaces and chimneys are to be constructed of solid brick or block, or shall be factory built units that have been tested and listed by a nationally recognized testing laboratory. Hollow masonry units are to be made solid by grouting the cells or other acceptable methods. The installation of factory built fireplace units is checked at the time of the framing inspection.

  2. The masonry fireplace shall be built to the point of installation of the first flue liner. The first liner may or may not be in place.

  3. An 8″ clearance is required from the fireplace opening to the damper. The damper shall be installed and operable from the room side.

  4. The exterior combustion air intake must be installed.

  5. The fireplace throat must be parged to a smooth finish in addition to all corbelled masonry in the smoke chamber.

  6. The fireplace dimensions, the thickness of fireplace walls and the firebox dimensions are checked at this time.

  7. The fireplace flue size, which is based upon the size of the fireplace opening and the height of the chimney, is checked at this time.

  8. The minimum clearance to combustible materials is checked.
