  Summary of Actions Taken by the Board on July 24, 2007

 

Mr. Donati led the Board, staff, and public in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

 

Rev. Fletcher Lowe provided the invocation.

 

The Board approved the minutes of the July 10, 2007 Regular and Special Meetings.

 

PRESENTATIONS

Christina Harris, Chairperson of the Keep Henrico Beautiful Committee, was joined by Mr. Kaechele and Vice-Chairperson Lynne Smolin-Yurchak in presenting a Land Lover Award to Three Chopt District homeowners Roberto and Jean Sarmento and their children Nina, Max, and Marcus.

 

Mr. Donati presented a proclamation recognizing August 2007 as Firefighter Appreciation Month.  Accepting the proclamation from the County’s Division of Fire were Acting Fire Chief Richard McClure, Lt. T. C. Moore, and Firefighter Jackson Baynard.  Joining them was Candace Schwaldach, Program Coordinator for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Richmond District. 

 

MANAGER’S COMMENTS

Mr. Hazelett advised that gavel to gavel audio recordings of Board of Supervisors regular meetings would begin with this meeting and be made available the next morning on compact discs or in electronic format to anyone wishing to receive a copy, including members of the Board of Supervisors.

 

BOARD OF SUPERVISORS’ COMMENTS

Mrs. O’Bannon noted that the County served as one of the hosts of the 2007 National Association of Counties (NACo) Annual Conference, which attracted more than 3,500 participants.  She thanked the many county government employees from Henrico and other localities in central Virginia who volunteered their time and efforts to assist with the conference.  Mrs. O’Bannon also thanked the County’s Division of Recreation and Parks and those local and national businesses that helped sponsor and support the Women of NACo (WON) Leadership Network golf tournament hosted by the County at Belmont Golf Course on July 12, 2007.   The tournament netted more than $14,500.  Finally, Mrs. O’Bannon thanked Henrico residents and others in the community who rolled out the red carpet for conference attendees.     

 

Mr. Donati recognized Brian Kiernan from Boy Scout Troop 776, sponsored by the Columbian Center on Pump Road, who is working on his Communications Merit Badge.

PUBLIC COMMENTS

 

Pamela Ward, a resident of the Fairfield District, voiced concerns regarding her and her son’s recent series of encounters with a County police detective and the status of an internal investigation of this matter by the County’s Division of Police.   

 

D. L. Clevert, a resident of the Brookland District and retired County police officer, expressed concerns that the County’s recruitment and retention of police officers and its pay scales for police officer positions are not in step with the growth of the County.
