Summary of Actions Taken by the Board on December 13, 2005

 

Mr. Thornton led the Board, staff, and public in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

 

Rev. Richard M. Landess, Pastor, StukeleyHall Baptist Church, provided the invocation.

 

The minutes of the November 22, 2005 Regular and Special Meetings, and March 14 – 17, 2005 Special Meeting were approved.

 

MANAGER’S COMMENTS

Mr. Hazelett noted the representative sample of gifts on display in the Board Room donated by County employees to the 2005 Henrico Christmas Mother and pointed out that Sheriff’s Office employees contributed more than 50 new bicycles. He recognized County government Christmas Mother Program Chair, Barbara Poole of the County Manager’s Office, and her Co-Chair, Lisa Orlosky of the Department of Information Technology.  Mrs. Poole and Mrs. Orlosky presented a check in the amount of $12,800 to the Henrico Christmas Mother, Ethel Jackson, on behalf of County employees and officials. Mrs. Jackson recognized the tireless efforts of Mrs. Poole and Mrs. Orlosky and the strong participation by County agencies. 

PUBLIC COMMENTS

Lawrence Demena, a resident of the Varina District and member of the Fairfield Woods Homeowners Association, reiterated concerns regarding the status of plans to correct a drainage problem in his neighborhood.

 

Malvern "Rudy" Butler, President of the Virginia Association of Counties and Chairman of the Goochland County Board of Supervisors, announced that he will be visiting counties throughout Virginia during the coming year and was pleased to be observing a Board meeting in Henrico.  Mr. Butler commented that he will be enlisting the efforts of county officials to lobby the Virginia General Assembly during the upcoming session on transportation and education issues.  He also stated that Henrico County’s Legislative Liaison, Linda Robinson, does a commendable job on behalf of the County.    

BOARD OF SUPERVISORS’ COMMENTS

Mr. Kaechele noted that a dedication ceremony for the Deep Run Recreation Center was held on December 4, 2005.  He invited Henrico citizens to visit this new facility and thanked the public for supporting the 2000 bond referendum that funded the project.

Mr. Thornton recognized the following Boy Scouts from Troop 418, sponsored by St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, who were observing the meeting to fulfill merit badge requirements:  Taylor Jenkins, Gordon McCormick, and Carter Younts.  Parents Burke McCormick and Mitt Younts were also present.    

 

RECOGNITION OF NEWS MEDIA

Mr. Thornton recognized Olympia Meola from the Richmond Times-Dispatch and Jonathan Spiers from the Henrico County Leader.

Resolution in Memory of Warner Magajar Jones, Sr., a retired Henrico County public educator and member of the County’s Historic Preservation Advisory Committee.  Mr. Thornton presented the resolution to the following members of Mr. Jones’ family:  Warner M.
