Summary of Actions Taken by the Board on November 8, 2005

 

Mr. Thornton led the Board, staff, and public in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

 

Chaplain Harold L. Dimmitt, Henrico County Jail provided the invocation.

 

The minutes of the October 25, 2005 Regular and Special Meetings were approved.

 

MANAGER’S COMMENTS

The Keep Henrico Beautiful (KHB) Because We Care program has received the 2005 Scenic Virginia Award for the category of Best Local Anti-Litter Practices.  Scenic Virginia, Inc. is a private, non-profit organization that exists to preserve, protect, and enhance the scenic beauty of the Commonwealth.  Award winners from state and local levels were recognized at the Scenic Virginia Awards Ceremony and Luncheon on November 1, 2005.  Mr. Thornton presented an awards plaque to the following employee representatives, who were also in attendance at the November 1 awards ceremony:  Arthur Petrini, Director of Public Works; Steven Yob, Chief of Solid Waste; and Megan Brown, Executive Coordinator of KHB.  

 

On October 29, 2005, Mr. Yob competed in the Marine Corps Marathon, a national event held in Arlington County.  He finished the 26.2 mile route in three hours and 36 minutes.

 

Ethel Jackson, a resident of the Fairfield District, was introduced as the 2005 Henrico Christmas Mother.  She noted the challenge of serving the many persons in the community who are in need and thanked the County for its continued support of the Christmas Mother program. 

 

BOARD OF SUPERVISORS’ COMMENTS

Mr. Kaechele noted that Henrico citizens had the opportunity to use new touch-screen voting machines during the November 8, 2005 general election. Mr. Donati asked Mr. Hazelett to clarify the costs of these machines


Mr. Thornton recognized the following Boy Scouts who were observing the meeting with Cardinal District Merit Badge Counselor Michael Muldowney to fulfill a requirement for the Citizenship in the Community Merit Badge:  Tim Webb - Troop 710, sponsored by DeWitt Clinton Masonic Lodge 141; Evan Hughes, Darin Stiefvater, and Reed Stiefvater - Troop 720, sponsored by Mount Vernon Baptist Church; and Cory Bowles, Christopher Evans, Andrew Schwieder, Robbie Schwieder, and William Schwieder -Troop 736, sponsored by St. Michael’s Catholic Church.  Joining them was Andrew Bowles from Cub Scout Pack 720, sponsored by Mount Vernon Baptist Church.    

 

Mr. Thornton also recognized the following Boy Scouts who were observing the meeting with their parents to fulfill merit badge requirements: Jared Appleby and Russ Gathright – Troop 509, sponsored by Four Mile Creek Baptist Church; Brandon Stevens and Patrick Sutton – Troop 534, sponsored by Fairfield Presbyterian Church; David Newsome – Troop 770, sponsored by River Road Presbyterian Church; Michael Drash and Russell Smith – Troop 747, sponsored by Gayton Baptist Church; and Marshall Irby – Troop 840, sponsored by St. Michael’s Episcopal Church.

Mr. Thornton recognized Tom Lappas from the Henrico Citizen, Jonathan Spiers from the Henrico County Leader, and Joanna Massey and Herbert Hurni from WRIC-TV 8.
