Income Protection programs offer income replacement during periods of disability.

Aetna Short Term Income Protection

Aetna Short Term Income Protection (STIP) program coordinates with County leave balances. Employees can elect to purchase coverage for waiting periods of 14 days, 28 days or 42 days. Participating employees may use either their County leave or Aetna STIP benefits during an absence of 90 days or less. STIP benefits provide 60% of an employee’s salary. Employees in VRS Plan 1 and 2 may enroll within 31 days of hire and during the annual open enrollment period.

Employees in the VRS Hybrid Retirement Plan may enroll within 31 days of hire for a one-year period after which they become eligible for benefits under the Hybrid Disability Program (see details below).

County Long Term Income Protection

Henrico County’s Long Term Income Protection (LTIP) program is administered by the Department of Human Resources’ Benefits Division for full-time employees who are VRS Retirement Plan 1 or Plan 2 members and have completed 6 months of employment. This program provides coverage after 90 days of disability. Henrico County provides coverage for up to a $50,000 annual salary at no charge. If your salary is above $50,000 and you have been employed at least six months, you may be eligible to purchase  additional coverage for the remainder of your salary. Long-term income protection benefits provide 60% of an employee’s salary.

Employees in the VRS Hybrid Retirement Plan are automatically enrolled in the Hybrid Disability Program (see details below) and are not eligible for coverage under the County’s LTIP program.

Hybrid Disability Program

Henrico County provides a program of short term and long term disability benefits for employees that are members of the VRS Hybrid Retirement Plan. The VRS Hybrid Retirement Plan does not offer disability retirement benefits. Instead, this disability program for VRS Hybrid Retirement Plan members is provided and fully paid by the County in accordance with state law.
